Protecting the Future of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem
We build power to protect one of the world’s most iconic ecosystems from unplanned growth and irresponsible development
The Problem
Unsustainable Growth is Putting the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem’s Future at Risk
Across the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), land-use decisions are increasingly influenced by short-term real estate and development interests. Without strong leadership, community engagement, and accountability, this growth without guardrails threatens the region’s wildlife, watersheds, and rural values that make this place special.
What's at stake?
- Irreplaceable habitat
- Water resources
- Rural character
- Ecosystem stability
At a time when many wild places are fragmented and degraded, the GYE remains a relatively connected and wild landscape — but it's under immense pressure.
Our Mission & Values
We strengthen local leadership and empower communities to take action in their own backyards to defend the extraordinary lands, waters, and wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Project Greater Yellowstone unites citizens, scientists, and local leaders around a common vision to protect one of the world’s most iconic landscapes from the threats of unplanned growth and shortsighted development. With the right tools and support, elected officials and institutions will make lasting decisions that put nature and community first.
Project Greater Yellowstone’s approach is unique and includes research, education, and collaboration between communities across the GYE, as well as advocacy, organizing, and participation in local government decision-making and elections.
